    Prologue:

The day was much like any other when Alexander Overmire opened his eyes fairly warm though slightly cooler given that it was autumn. He got up and took a shower before eating breakfast and getting dressed. He always had a tendency to leave early to avoid the morning traffic as much as possible. Alexander lived in Las Angeles so of course traffic could be detrimental to his attendance.

He was out of the house by five thirty in the morning and well on his way to work. He was one of the many lab workers at the local hospital. He would go in every morning clock in and then head to the lab. He had few friends outside of work and was single much to his chagrin especially considering that he was thirty seven years old. Still he didn’t let such things get in the way of work. Today was going to be an interesting day because his direct superior Thomas Hardens had an announcement to make.

Alexander stood quietly with the rest of his coworkers waiting for Thomas to speak up. Thomas was a rather stocky man so to speak. Many called him fat or overweight but Thomas kept the optimistic view of “Being well built for famine”. His hair was grey and slightly balding and his pasty white skin made him look rather ill. Thomas cleared his throat as he raised one of his large pudgy arms up in front of him “Today we have been given a special assignment” He sounded quite serious though no one in the room knew the significance of what was about to be stated. “We have been given a bunch of materials to attempt create a cure for cancer” everyone was flabbergasted none more so than Alexander.

This was a big deal to Alexander because he had lost his father to cancer and so he was ready to throw his all into this project. All the men and woman in the lab began to throw themselves with gusto into the combining of chemicals and the boiling of gasses to see if they could finally come up with a cure for one of the supposedly “Uncurable” Diseases known to mankind. Hours passed and they seemed no closer to anything that could even be remotely considered to be close to a plausible cure. Each new syrum produced seemed to suffer the same thing a brief success upon a sample before it was overcome. Still none gave up on what they were out to do for it was one of the greatest causes any of them could have ever dreamed of working on.

    Chapter 1: The Breakthrough

Four months had passed since the start of the experiments to cure cancer and not a single test result had worked. It was now October sixth in the year of two thousand and thirteen, and many of the lab workers were getting frustrated and confused by their lack of success. Each and every one of them knew that it wasn’t going to be an easy task and they also knew that things didn’t always quite work the way they hoped.

Alexander had started to doze off as he and his co-workers Todd Ellis, and Paul Shardigan had once again failed to create a working vaccine. It was about this time when a shout of surprise and joy came from the opposite side of the lab. The three men quickly rushed along with most of the scientists to see what was going on. Standing above a petri dish with an excited smile on her face was Amelia Phinnet a young French woman who had joined their department around two months prior to the assignment of this task. She was a fairly tall woman standing at six feet and two inches in height. Amelia’s hair was a deep brown color that was always decorated with a ribbon or some other little bauble. She was also a fairly petite young woman with tanned skin and vibrant glowing sapphire eyes.

“I think that I have done it!!” she called excitedly causing everyone to examine what she had done. The liquid in the petri dish was a deep red in color and seemed to be the only inhabitant of the dish. Upon further inspection through a microscope it was discovered that the syrum was in fact the only inhabitant of the dish. They quickly got a new dish with a new cancer cell and dropped another drop of the red syrum in. They watched in amazement as the agent destroyed the cancer cell without the cancer regenerating. It was the breakthrough they had been striving for. Alexander couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face as they prepared to present their discovery to Thomas.

Thomas as expected was quite impressed especially after they all discovered that it seemed to eradicate any cancer cell they threw it at. The entire lab staff decided to throw a celebratory party that would last the rest of the day and they would test it on living subjects the fallowing day. All in the room couldn’t help but feel excited that they may have finally beaten cancer and that the human race could be rid of the illness forever.

Balloons drifted through the air and streamers were hung all across the office area outside of the lab as all of the workers were present for the party. Alexander couldn’t quite help the good mood and bright smile that seemed to radiate from him. This was the day they all thought that they could place their names in history as the group that had cured cancer. They had all agreed that today would be the one day they would all allow themselves to cut loose and have some fun.

Music blasted in the office as many of the workers danced. One man in particular Alexander Overmire had not been happier. He was currently dancing with the one who had discovered their miracle syrum Amelia Phennit. “So do you dance to this kind of music often doctor Overmire?” She asked him her French accent sounding quite alluring to the drunk doctor. “No…not really” He responded gulping a bit as he stared at her eyes. She took notice of this and giggled at his reaction. He was rather un-amused by the fact that she had laughed at him though he was willing to forgive it since she was such a beautiful young woman. The two continued to dance practically oblivious to the world around them.

The world was bleary and painful for Alexander when awoke the next morning in fact it was like that for most of his co-workers who had passed out during the party there in the office. Fortunately for all of them they all seemed to have had enough self control while drunk not to do anything irrefutably stupid. They would all head home to prepare themselves for today. Today the seventh of October the day when they would begin testing Phennit’s agent on animals.

Authors note: More will come over the next few days.

Chapter 2: The First tests and the bold proclamation

Everyone was now sober and awake ready to begin their work though Amelia Phennit was quite nervous. She couldn’t bring herself to be the one to apply the agent thus she chose Alexander to do it for her. The syrum was stored in a large vat constantly being monitored to make sure that no unexpected changes occurred while they were storing it. The first tests would be conducted on rats and they would be observed for a few hours after injection before the next tests would commence. Alexander was gearing up in the suit designed to guard him against chemical infection while he did his work. The thick suit was in place with the thick plated boots and hide gloves to guard his hands. The final piece to put into place was the helmet with the air purifiers and glass shielding for his face. He was ready to get to work.

Alexander entered the chamber where the tests would be held with a sigh. He truly hated doing this to animals but it was for the sake of humanity as well. His co-worker and assistant for this was a fellow named Jim and he was holding the syringe that held the “Canicad” as it had been dubbed. Laying on a table squirming weakly was a mouse that had been infected with cancer weeks prior to today. Alexander sighed as took the syringe and stuck it into the mouse. The creature squirmed and squeaked before going silent. “Did it die?” Jim asked curiously before the monitors showed that it was very much alive. Soon the next three or four mice were brought in for injections.

Three hours passed and the experiment was deemed successful and that the mice were now up and about and quite healthy. So it was back to the lab to use on something a bit larger this time dogs. Alexander sighed as he again began to inject the animals with the Canicad syrum. “I honestly hope that this stuff keeps working” He remarked off handedly to Jim as he injected the fifth of the dogs. Again hours of observation showed that the cure worked on dogs. The next step would be a batch of animals more sapien in nature monkeys.

It was roughly seven thirty in the evening when the monkeys were brought in for the tests and everyone was anxious to see how this would work. The first monkey was placed before him and Alexander apologized for any pain it would feel as he injected it. Then he moved on to the next one repeating the process hoping that things would go smoothly. He was unaware that the next day would be the day that Canicad would go public. He went back to the regular duties of data analysis and genetic material observation while they waited for the results. Midnight of the Eighth revealed that Canicad worked on Sapien creatures and thus Thomas decided they were ready to begin testing on humans.

October eighth two thousand and thirteen was an exciting day for the team as they all lined up and stood waited patiently for the media team to arrive. Today they would announce to the world that Canicad would be tested on humans for the first time soon. Amelia and Alexander stood side by side as the creator and applicant of the new potential miracle drug Canicad. “I’m quite nervous to be honest” The young woman proclaimed as she looked at the man next to her. Alexander chuckled “We all are Doctor Phennit we all are” he remarked trying to be formal given the occasion and one never knew who could be listening in.

The press arrived and Thomas stepped forward to meet them with a smile on his face. “Hello good sirs and madams it is a pleasure to see you all here today for our grand announcement.” The reporters all nodded as they looked at Thomas who then stated “I am Doctor Thomas Hardens the director of the lab team here behind me. We are here today to announce that we are testing an agent we have dubbed Canicad a possible cure for cancer.” There were murmurs of surprise from the press but before any of them could speak Thomas spoke again “We have already done animal tests and each has proven successful thus far, we have even tested on sapien beings such as Monkeys. It has been decided that as soon as we have solidified our research and set everything up we will begin testing on human subjects this month.” The media personnel burst into a frenzy at this proclamation.

“Here with us are not only the team who helped create canicad but the young woman Doctor Amelia Phennit who made the breakthrough allowing us to commence our tests.” The young woman stepped forth and waved politely at everyone “It was a very fortunate discovery nothing more” she remarked modestly “However I could not bring myself to conduct the tests so I asked my co-worker Doctor Alexander Overmire to conduct them in my stead” The mentioned man stepped forward “Yes and with god’s blessings may the syrum continue to work and rid us of the menace that is cancer” a loud cheer was the response to this.

Thanks Lina. Now here's the next part

Chapter 3:  The human test and marketing

Days had passed and it was October fourteenth. Alexander Overmire had been selected as the official administering scientist for the Canicad tests after being recognized as the one who conducted the animal tests. He sighed realizing that he was now the official name tied with the drugs administration. He wasn’t its creator but his name still carried a lot of weight with this drugs fate. The patient he was about to see was a man named Stan Connelly who was age thirty four, and a stage two cancer patient. This was going to be the toughest test yet.

Stan was lying on the bed in the hospital as he awaited this new drug they were going to use him to test. He honestly didn’t mind considering this was the only other option aside from an extensive chemo therapy campaign that only had a thirty percent chance of working to begin with. The door opened and his original doctor a man called Doctor Ferdinand entered with a different Doctor fallowing him. Ferdinand looked to Stan and stated “This is Doctor Overmire he’ll be the one administering the drugs today.” Stan was a little confused but he nodded. Alexander smiled and stated “Greetings Mr. Connelly I’m here today to oversee your treatment. You needn’t worry it shouldn’t hurt” he had a kind and reassuring smile on his face as he stated this.

Shortly thereafter Stan was hooked up to a machine and the Canicad was administered. It was a slow process going by IV but it was probably one of the safest that they could think of. Stan and Alexander spent a few hours just idly chatting about life and various forms of philosophy. After the drug was fully administered Alexander looked at Stan “Now from this point on you may be tired and will need to rest. I will be observing you over the next several days to see how things go alright?” Stan simply nodded unsure of what he could say before he blacked out.

Alexander couldn’t believe his eyes as he looked at the results for the treatment of Stan Connelly. He knew that Canicad quickly killed cancer cells in the animals and that they had recovered pretty quickly but he wasn’t expecting similar results in Stan. He handed the charts to Doctor Ferdinand who couldn’t believe it either. Neither man knew just what to say except to congratulate Stan for his quick recovery and lack of cancer. Stan was so excited that shortly after being discharged from the hospital he ran a charity marathon for curing cancer. Honestly this was one of the happiest days for a few people. The first was obviously Stan Connelly, the second was Alexander Overmire, and the third was Amelia Phennit. It was made official October the twentieth was the day that Canicad had proven effective on at least one human. Twenty other patients were turned into test samples for the drug and all twenty seemed to have similar recoveries.

October the thirtieth was a day of joy for twenty families as their loved ones who had become test subjects were able to return home. Doctor Thomas Hardens declared on international television that Canicad was now to be the cure for cancer and would be administered worldwide. The science team now referred to around the world as “The progenitors of Canicad” were all celebrating their big success this time at a hotel with no strains on their party.

    Chapter 4: Outbreak Z

November fifteenth was a depressing day for Alexander as he was informed of the death of Stan Connelly. He sighed heavily as he went into work with a heavy heart. “What is the matter?” Amelia Phennit asked him curiously. He looked at her for a moment “Stan Connelly our first human patient passed away due to what can only be assumed was heart failure” She flinched hearing that. Everyone in the lab knew that Alexander had befriended the man during his brief stay at the hospital and none of them could blame him for feeling down.  The whole team was somber as they proceeded with their usual form of work.

November seventeenth and eighteenth were the worst two days in the world for the entire science team. The seventeenth they were barraged with reports of people who had received Canicad dying left and right they were thoroughly depressed. The eighteenth brought about the worst though. While they were all working diligently soldiers suddenly burst into the lab ordering them to be quiet and fallow along. Not wanting any trouble the group did as they were told though Alexander had to wonder if the government was going to punish them for their backfiring cure. They soon found themselves being led to a helicopter that would take them to a place none of them could have predicted.

They were dropped off at a secret facility in Nevada where the remaining patients of Canicad rested. Standing before them was a man in uniform who looked at them with curiosity “Are you all responsible for this?” He asked gesturing at the patients who were strapped to their beds struggling though none of them were exactly alive anymore at least not according to the instruments attached to them. This made the scientists flinch. Thomas stepped forward “Now who are you and just what is the meaning of this?” The man frowned “I’m Colonel Nicholas Revou and these things are your responsibility now” “Things?” Amelia asked stunned that the colonel would refer to them in such a way at least until they all got a close up view of what the people had become. The Colonel told them that they were there to research a cure for this new world wide pandemic or die trying. They were all uncertain as they stared at the un-living victims of their drug before them.

This concludes Syrum of Damnation in order to find out what happens to the scientists please play or read Dead Walking.
